Catalonia's most quirky tradition on the 15th of August
The 'castells', or 'human towers', are Catalonia's iconic and quirky tradition and is a must see if you're there for the festival, celebrated every year on the 15th of August. Teams called 'colles castellers' compete to build the best tower. A child climbs to the top, raising four fingers symbolising the Catalan flag. The teamwork is remarkable, with the crowd below acting as a safety net. The castellers represent strength, balance, courage, and common sense. You can watch their weekly practice sessions near Clot metro station.
