We’re sure that many of you would agree that exploring and discovering local markets is one of the best things to do on holidays. Whether it’s a flea, food, antique, Christmas, art, book or any other market - we are here for it! We wanted to make your holidays a little bit easier and listed the best Christmas markets for you to explore in all August destinations. These are our favourite ones, and we hope you love them as much as we do.
Paris
Paris is arguably one of the prettiest cities during the festive season. You will find Christmas markets all over the French capital where you can soak up the festive vibes and atmosphere. If you are in Paris during December, you must visit the Christmas Village at La Défense. Explore the magic of Christmas, Le Magie de Noël at Tuileries Garden - it stretches along the entire north edge from Rue des Pyramides to Place de la Concord - no doubt, you will love the carnival vibes and Christmas market. Other beautiful Christmas markets that we recommend checking out are: Marché de Noël à Montmartre, Marché de Noël Italie 2 and Marché de Noël du Mail Branly - enjoy mulled wine, cheese, local chocolate treats and endless festive lights.
Rome
The Roman Christmas markets are world-famous with streets full of local sellers, musicians, artists and festive lights. Perhaps it goes without saying that the food in the markets is divine! The market at Piazza Navone is the most famous market which we recommend checking out. Do your Christmas shopping in the market at Piazza Mazzini, they are known for selling Italian sweets, toys and typical Christmas decorations and lights. If you have time, check out the Mercato Monti market as well, it is not a Christmas market but sells a lot of festive food and drinks during the winter season.
Barcelona
The Catalan food, holiday markets, festive lights and plenty of decorations makes Barcelona an excellent Christmas destination. The oldest market in town is the La Fira de Santa Llucia which dates back to the 18th century, expect to find traditional trees, mistletoes and other Christmas decorations from this market. Another great spot to visit is the Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Família which has an excellent local atmosphere with great festive snacks. The newest Christmas market in Barcelona is the Fira de Nadal del Port Well featuring over 30m high LED Christmas tree, workshops and activities for all family members.
Cannes
Local red wine and delicious French cuisine sound like a festive dream to us! The annual Christmas Fair, Allées De La Liberté, in Cannes is hosted on the Esplanade Pantiero. The Canadian Christmas Village is another really popular festive activity that is suitable for individuals, couples and families. The city is full of Christmas parades, stalls and other festivities during December and early January.
Tuscany
Christmas in Tuscany has been a popular choice for our homeowners, and it comes as no surprise as the area has many excellent festivities such as Weihnachtsmarkt in Florence, the market in Piazza Santa Croce (Florence), Mercato ned Campo in Siena, Santa’s Factory in Pisa. The city of Arezzo turns into a Christmas City with events for young and older. The city of Lucca, which is within proximity of our August homes, has plenty of food and flea markets during December that are worth checking out.
Mallorca
Mallorcan capital Palma is definitely the busiest area during Christmas. This popular destination has 300 days of sunshine every year making it ideal for anyone looking for sunshine during the festive season. Check out the Puerto Portals market, Plaza Mayor, Pueblo Espańol in the Son Dureta area and Alaró Christmas market while enjoying the great weather with some sangria and local delicacies.
The Cotswolds
The Cotswolds must be the dreamiest destination on this list during the Christmas season. It is the movie ‘The Holiday’ in real life and you won’t be disappointed with the offering. The festive markets go around the villages in the Cotswolds and the surrounding areas: Bath, Blenheim Palace (our personal favourite!), Cheltenham, Chipping Campden, Oxford and Gloucester. They are all so picturesque and idyllic with plenty of local produce for sale.
Chamonix
Chamonix is another popular destination for our homeowners during December, and it comes as no surprise when you have the magnificent Mont Blanc as a backdrop covered with snow and festive lights. The ski season kicks off in December with plenty of activities in the area. Enjoy the parade on the streets of Chamonix with Papa Noêl followed by the local school children. The local Christmas market consists of small wooden chalets with a festive and relaxed atmosphere, Chamonix is a great choice to spend your Christmas in.
