London: Location, renovation, inspiration

Between a palace and a park lies a new Pied-à-Terre apartment. We have kept its best and upgraded the rest to create a handsome home. Welcome to London life, the August Way
We are turning this two-bedroom apartment into a living space that lives up to its smart neighbourhood. This means a heap of demolishing and compliance considerations - the street is in the Cornwall Conservation Area. This would all take time, energy and effort without August.
We keep the best, including a striking Victorian fireplace and radiator, and upgrade the rest. We’ve added a super new bathroom so the apartment has an extra en suite to the principal bedroom. The kitchen was demolished, too, to open up the main living space, and prep it for its glow-up.
The before-and-after floorplan shows how we’ve re-designed the space to maximise its potential and modernise.
An added bathroom gives an en suite to the principal bedroom. The custom-built kitchen will feature today’s take on a traditional Victorian pantry - slick-looking storage, which is welcome both aesthetically and for its space. A hallmark of Victorian age kitchen design is cabinetry in solid oak or teak with bright clean wood worktop, cream cabinets and finishes in copper. These replaced the preceding Georgian era of marble worktops, bronze accessories and blue as the colour scheme. What remains the same is the light flooding in the kitchen windows - as lovely as it was centuries ago.
Inspiration: Victorian decor details
The bathrooms stand out stylistically with its super smart black and white floor tiling – this was a classic combination in the period.
Scenes from our design team’s inspirational mood board
Colour-wise, our theme includes a contemporary take on Victorian colours which were much darker than today’s shades . Popular colours include greys, greens, golds, dark pinks and reds. To make the theme work in this apartment, a lighter shade of the original Victorian paint colour will align with the nod to the period. Our team works often with Farrow & Ball, and their Templeton Pink No.303 is described as a historic-feeling pink.
We have contemporary and traditional furniture and art pieces to both contrast with and complement the classic frame. Our inspiration here is the city itself and the constant evolution and excitement London offers all those who pass through.
