As the saying goes, “if these walls could talk’’, but in Rome’s case, ‘’if these streets could talk it would be an endless stream of stories within this beautiful city”. With centuries of history, and ancient and renaissance buildings within a city that once ruled the world, this is our guide to truly getting the most out of your visit to the Italian Capital. Advised by Rome natives, this breakdown will give you plenty to try out.
You cannot go to Italy, especially Rome and not be amazed at the food available. It's almost a way of life unlike anywhere else in the world, so here’s our most notable places to visit.
The Aroma Hotel Restaurant
Located on the top floor of the Palazzo Manfredian, you will immediately be greeted by the open-view kitchen, with the restaurant seating hosting an incredibly intimate and romantic ambience that invites you to relax as you take in the panoramic views of the Colosseum. With such unbelievable views, it's hard to believe the food would be as good as it is; Chef Di Lorio’s tasting menus combine classic Italian recipes and ingredients into new unique tasting experiences. Built around the finest local ingredients from local roman markets that are brought back every day, there are two tasting menus; one showcasing Chef Di Lorio’s unique creations and another comprising regional speciality.
Hostaria Da Corrado
A local hotspot and favourite, Hostaria Da Corrado gives you a true taste of Italian cuisine and hospitality. Located close to the centre of Rome, it is a great place to visit any time of day, even at peak times. With reasonable prices, it’s easy to understand why the locals love it and continue to go back.
Tonnarello Roma
Situated in the heart of Trastevere, the most cultural and historic part of Rome, Tonnarello offers traditional dishes with their own spin. Offering pasta, pizza and meat/fish, the menu does not account for the delicious extras that come as standard, including a rosemary focaccia that is hard to forget once you’ve had it. A quick search on TikTok or Instagram will show you how popular this place is, we could recommend the whole menu, so best to go hungry and try a lot!
Pizzeria Baffetto
As the name suggests, Pizzeria Baffetto is a pizza restaurant that we simply love to visit any time we go to Rome. A few steps from Piazza Nvona and the Pantheon, the heart of the historic centre, Baffetto captures the true essence of Roman pizza.
Over 50 years old, the flavours are authentic and traditional, capturing the capital’s traditions. The pizza marinara, although simple, is a sure-fire winner that we would recommend all of you try when visiting.
Pizzeria La Boccaccia
If you’re in a rush or want to embrace the Roman way of life, grabbing a slice of pizza on the go is a must. Pizzeria la Boccasccia has every type of pizza imaginable, and in such an easy compact form is a great place to go for a snack or light lunch. Within the Trastevere Quarter, it is in a central location which is perfect for getting around Rome.
For those early evenings or times you’re not quite ready for dinner but fancy a drink ahead in a beautiful location, we recommend The Court.
With another great view of the Colosseum from a traditional courtyard (hence the name), the Court is internationally recognised as one of the top 100 bars in the world. The incredible views are accompanied by a selection of cocktails that are recognised for being some of the finest, most forward-thinking and innovative drinks available in the city. We would recommend a Gibson Martini or Hanky Panky as two of their signature classics.
Roman coffee shops are the perfect way to start the day or have a mid afternoon pick-me-up, and it's definitely short of them!
Bar San Calisto
A great bar and cafe with years of culture and history, Bar San Calisto is a must-do stop-off place when you need a respite.
Filled with locals, this is a great place to immerse yourself within the culture and community whilst indulging in your Italian macchiato or cappuccino.
Boccione l’antico Forno
One of our favourite places to pick up fresh croissants, and delicious baked goods, Boccione Little Oven, is a bakery that never fails to impress us. Whether it’s their gorgeous hazelnut tarts or their cheesecake, the queues are worth it for a delicious taste of Rome.
