Barcelona Beckons: Unveiling Our Latest Pied À Terre

History, architecture, gastronomy and a long stretch of golden sand: Spain’s Catalan capital has it all. Characterised by its Gothic buildings, world-class shopping streets, markets, museums and burgeoning food scene, there is no wonder Barcelona is one of five iconic destinations that form the August Pied À Terre Collection, alongside the urban enclaves of London, Paris, Cannes and Rome.

Making up one fifth of the latest completed Pied À Terre Collection, St Germain, we are thrilled to reveal details of our latest Barcelona bolthole for the very first time… A two-bedroom apartment in the central and sought-after district of Eixample.

The Location 

A stone’s throw away from the majestic Plaça de Catalunya - Barcelona’s beating heart - the newest addition to our Pied à Terre Collection finds home in the vibrant neighbourhood of Eixample. An elegant third-floor abode, its intimate balcony overlooks a quiet, leafy boulevard, on the edge of the verdant oasis of Parc de la Ciutadella.

Chosen for its abundance of green spaces and proximity to Barcelona’s beach, the neighbourhood perfectly balances the energy of urban living with a laid-back community feel. While characterised by its open squares and notable landmarks, Eixample’s cobbled side-streets are home to a plethora of hidden gems; vermuto bars, market stalls, bookshops and boutiques, many of which fall under the tourist radar, reserved for August owners and locals alone.

The Home 

Resting on the third floor of a classical six-storey building dating back to 1879, our newest Pied À Terre underwent a meticulous renovation - a journey that combined the August design language with elements of Art Nouveau, and flashes of 70s flair. The apartment’s interiors were completely transformed to emphasise the organic - think soaring ceilings, wooden beams, picture windows and French doors - while amenities were all updated to create a home just as well suited to restful nights in as days exploring the city.

Prior to receiving its August overhaul, the apartment had been left untouched for over sixty years. Boxy rooms beckoned to be opened up and original features revealed. Today, it takes on a different form. A light-flooded living area leads out onto an elegant treetop balcony on one side, and a comfortable kitchen diner on the other. An atmospheric hallway with traditional cornicing and wall panelling leads to two en-suite bedrooms and a separate laundry/storage room for taking care of the essentials. Throughout the apartment, new engineered wood flooring creates continuity throughout, alongside two-panel doors to add to the authentic allure.

Sleeping

Accessed from the airy entrance hall, the first of the apartment’s two bedrooms draws the eye to a restored vaulted ceiling washed in soft white to add to its contemporary feel. Below, a super king bed is an inviting central focal point, draped with textured linens and anchored with a quirky curved headboard, mirroring the arches of the ceiling above. Either side, wooden console tables are graced with colourful lamps for a touch of 70s appeal, and an antique dressing table offers a nod to the building’s classical roots. A bijoux en-suite shower room and separate WC are clad in Zellige-style tiles for a touch of rustic beauty.

Affording each guest ample privacy, the second of the generously proportioned bedrooms is also accessed off the corridor, via grand double doors. To the right, an alcove reserved for sleeping is draped in hues of blush and gold offering the perfect place to retreat. To the left, a further en-suite bathroom features a bespoke wooden vanity, walk-in shower and separate WC.

Socialising

Though Barcelona is a bustling destination year-round, the beauty of owning a second home means that evenings can be spent together around the family table, or sunken into the sofa sharing stories with friends. With two sets of full-height French doors, the apartment’s living room is an inviting place to gather, with linen drapes lining its walls and softly swaying in the evening breeze. A sumptuous sofa sits at its centre, upholstered in an opulent blue, alongside two oversized armchairs perfectly positioned around a coffee table for effortless conversation.

Inspired by the grandeur of the building’s facade, an oversized rug, rust-coloured throws, velvet pillows and an antique writing desk complete the living space, creating an unrivalled backdrop for mornings spent sipping café con leche from your favourite local spot.

Entirely reconfigured to be broken-plan in style, two open doorways link the living room to the kitchen diner, replacing the former standalone kitchen, a once dark and unsocial room. At one end, a dining table seating four can be atmospherically lit with its 70s chandelier, while at the other, new wooden kitchen cabinetry is crafted into two tones, adding interest and optimising the ceiling space for storage. In the corner, a mirrored bar trolley makes a welcome addition to romantic evenings spent sharing a cold bottle of Spanish sparkling wine…
