Welcome to Mallorca, the paradise for avid cyclists! The Balearic island is the cyclist's dream throughout the year - thanks to its great weather of 300 days of sunshine every year. Of course, there are seasonal changes that have an impact on your rides but many people visit the island on a monthly basis as it is a known spot for some scenic routes.
If you have followed our August journey for a while now, you’ll know that our City Collection and Signature Collection both have homes in Mallorca, situated in Sóller, Port de Sóller and Pollença. The homes near Sóller are nestled in the valley of the magnificent Tramuntana Mountains which is, in fact, known as the best cycling route in Mallorca. It’s only a short ride from Pollença as well and Port de Pollença is a popular base for many cyclists and has many organised cycling training camps.
The best route is the southern part of the Tramuntana Mountains followed by the coastal road from the town of Esporles to Andratx - a great route with short hills rather than sustained climbing. The roads are in a great condition and near Serra de Tramuntana, the area is relatively quiet with little traffic, offering a great environment for cycle rides.
Our homeowners from the Signature Collection visited their home in Sóller recently with their daughters who decided to explore the island on bikes. The bike hire in Sóller is roughly around 32€/day and there are two bike shops on the main Street by the beach. Electric bikes are a great way to tackle some daunting climbs in the routes - they are roughly 53€/day.
“All the towns are fantastic for bike stops, our favourites were Deia and Valldemossa. Great cafes etc, and cycling is very popular so lots of company on the roads. Homeowners in Sóller and in the Port will have similar cycling routes, and homeowners in Pollença have great choices for flatter terrain and easier cycling.”
Recommended routes
Some of the most popular rides are Cap de Formentor which is the most famous route in Mallorca as it offers some spectacular views of the island. Port de Pollença is at the foot of the journey and the route finishes at the beautiful lighthouse on Cap de Formentor. The route can get relatively touristy, but it is banned from motor vehicles from July to August from 10 am to 7 pm which makes it ideal for cyclists.
Tramuntana Coastal Road, which we briefly touched on, is a 110km route (our favourite one, the views are just from another world!), it takes you to the highest point of the Island with an 818m elevation and 6% average gradient. Discover Pollença, Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa, Banyalbufar and Estellences all on the route as well as some magnificent mountain views.
Another great route is Sa Calobra (a famous fishing town) known for its inspiring views and breathtaking beaches. The route is a more intermediate one with an average of 7% gradient and some 12% gradients towards the end (we warned you if you pick this route!).
For more flat routes, we recommend heading to the central region of Mallorca. Comfortable rides with beautiful views of picturesque villages on the way - explore Santa Maria, Bunyola or Coll d-Honor to Orient, down to Alaró.
